A Calling from the Start
From the time I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. It wasn’t something I ever questioned—it was just part of who I was. I followed that passion to the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where I majored in elementary education. In 2005, I began my very first full-time teaching job right here at St. Ann’s School.
I taught first grade at St. Ann for five wonderful years. Then, after my son Max was born, I made the decision to step away from the classroom and focus on raising my growing family. I stayed home until my youngest started school, and then slowly began finding my way back into education.
A Winding Path Back to the Classroom
Over the years, I eased back into teaching—covering a second-grade maternity leave in McFarland, subbing regularly, and even working in the office at my kids' intermediate school. As much as I enjoyed being involved in their daily school life, I realized something was missing. I missed the classroom. I missed teaching. I missed the joy of watching young learners grow.
Then I heard that a first grade teaching position had opened at St. Ann’s, and my heart jumped. The timing felt perfect. It had been more than a decade since I’d left—but the idea of returning to the very place where I began my teaching career filled me with excitement. This school year marks my first year back at St. Ann, and it truly feels like I’ve come home.
What Drew Me Back
Honestly? Mrs. Matz and Mrs. Stano played a big part. I met Mrs. Matz last year and we quickly connected over our shared connection to St. Ann’s. When she told me about the open position, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. This school had always held a special place in my heart.
Returning to St. Ann reminded me just how special this community is. It’s more than a school—it’s a family. Each class becomes a “school family,” and the entire building is filled with people who know and care for one another. We celebrate together, support one another, and create joy through learning.
The Joy of Teaching at St. Ann
What do I love most about teaching at St. Ann? The kids, hands down. One of my students said to me recently, “Mrs. Hoyer, we’re like a school family,” and my heart just melted. That’s exactly how I feel.
While much about St. Ann feels beautifully familiar, there are also some exciting changes since I last taught here. I love the Buddy Program, which fosters meaningful relationships across grade levels. The additional reading and counseling services have made such a positive impact, and I’m continually inspired by the dedication and warmth of our staff and families.
Inside the First Grade Classroom
You’d be amazed at how much we do in a day! We start with morning meetings and a question of the day, then dive into reading, writing, math, science, and religion. And let’s not forget the essentials—three recesses each day for play, movement, and socializing, which are so important for young learners.
Throughout the week, students also enjoy gym, art, music, library, Spanish, Mass, and adoration. It’s a full, dynamic schedule—balanced with plenty of laughter and small moments that make each day meaningful.
My Teaching Style & Philosophy
In my classroom, I focus on creating a warm, supportive environment where every student feels seen, valued, and safe. When children know they are cared for, their academic, social, and emotional growth blossoms.
I especially love our quiet reading times. Sitting with students—reading together one-on-one or in small groups—is a highlight of my day. I also enjoy creative projects that allow kids to express themselves and showcase their personalities.
One of our special traditions is the “Student Spotlight.” Each child gets a week to shine—bringing in photos, favorite books, and even special guests. We’ve had parents and grandparents join us to read, create art, or even play musical instruments like the guitar and accordion. It’s a wonderful way to build connection and confidence.
All About Books (and a Few Favorites)
Books are at the heart of our classroom. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d say Jan Brett’s The Mitten has always had a special place in my heart. But honestly? We love all stories in first grade. There’s nothing quite like watching a child fall in love with reading.
Looking Back & Looking Ahead
As this school year winds down, I feel that familiar, bittersweet tug. I’m excited for summer days with my own children, but it’s hard to say goodbye to my “school family.” Watching these amazing kids grow has been the most rewarding part of being back in the classroom.
That said, I’m already looking forward to next year—welcoming a new group of students and beginning another incredible journey together in first grade.
The Legacy I Hope to Leave
More than anything, I hope my students leave my classroom knowing they were deeply loved and believed in. I want them to remember feeling safe, supported, and valued. Because once a child feels that—once they believe in themselves—there’s no limit to what they can achieve.
