Pancake Porky Breakfast and Open House
What does breakfast time usually look like for you? Does it involve enjoying warm fluffy pancakes with syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit and coffee? Do you sit down and eat with family and friends and actually enjoy your meal while the children laugh and play in the background? If you’re laughing right now because this scenario sounds way too good to be true, you’re not alone. However, this is exactly what you are being invited into at St. Ann School’s 2nd Annual Pancake Porky Breakfast and Open House on October 6th from 9am - 12pm in the school’s gymnasium. Come everyone!
Why are we having breakfast together?
We believe that sharing a meal with family, friends and neighbors brings us closer together as a community. It’s one thing to chitchat with someone on the street corner, in the church foyer or in the school hallway, but it’s quite another to break bread together. There’s something that happens when we actually sit down and share a meal together that develops meaningful relationships and strengthens friendships. In the Bible, we often see Jesus stopping to eat with others. Eating together mattered to Jesus because it was a chance to deepen friendships, welcome others in and serve them. We want to welcome our entire community over for breakfast.
Deepen friendships
School drop off and pick ups are not always conducive to really getting to know other parents. The amount of people we pass by going in and out of church while our children tug at as for attention creates the same difficulties, as does the hurriedness of life. How often do you walk by your neighbor or someone you know from the community in the grocery store but never have time for more than a few words? Nothing is wrong with any of those scenarios, they just are not helpful for growing our friendships with people.
Jesus frequently invited his disciples and followers to sit down and share a meal with him. This is how he invested in his closest friendships, reminded them of his love and equipped them for what lay ahead.
Isn’t it funny how friendships deepen over a meal? Just inviting friends to breakfast, lunch, dinner or even coffee can create space for honest conversations, encouragement, and support.
Welcoming new friends
I remember when we first started coming to St. Ann School three years ago. A lot of people said hello and were very friendly. It was when a group of moms invited me to dinner with them that I really started to feel a sense of belonging and like I was part of the community. I felt known and assured my support system was growing. These women have become very good friends over the course of several meals and coffee breaks together.
One of the most well-known stories of Jesus sharing food involved five loaves of bread, two fishes, and Jesus miraculously turning that into enough food to feed 5,000 guests. He chose to be with and care for all of those people in order to teach us about God’s generosity and welcoming everyone to his “table”.
In a world that can be hostile to outsiders and increasingly isolating, we can use simple, shared mealtime to welcome others in. That’s exactly what our purpose is with the Pancake Porky Breakfast. Everyone from the community is welcome to share a meal and get to know one another better. The more the merrier. All 5,000 of you!
Open House, Meet the New Principal, and Activities for Kids
We’re proud of our school community and we’d love for you to check out our school if you’re new here. Before or after you’re done enjoying your meal, please free to meet and walk around for a tour with our new principal, Aimee Stano! Some veteran parents of St. Ann will also be giving school tours. We’ll have kid crafts and game activities, candy musical chairs and a kid’s sing-along time. There’s fun for everyone!
We look forward to sharing a meal with you at our school, on Sunday morning, October 6th. Bring the entire family and a friend or several.
*This is a “free will” donation event. Give as you feel led and as you are able. All proceeds will go towards St. Ann School’s gymnasium renovations, beginning with the stage curtains.
